Christmas Countdown Day 17

Deliver cookies as "secret elves." The strange faces are because the flash on my camera was blinding them.

We interrupt the Christmas Countdown...

...to tell you that I really like my new camera.

You real photographers probably don't appreciate this picture. But I have to say, I think it's the best picture I've ever taken.

Christmas Countdown Day 15

Make salt dough ornaments for the boys' friends. Lots of flour involved.

Christmas Countdown Day 4

See the lights at Lake Myra.

Sorry for the awful picture. My camera is broken, so this is the best it gets with an iPhone that can't handle movement, flashing lights in the background, and wiggly kids.

Adventures in Experimental Cooking from Scratch

A Recipe for a Yummy (if slightly disastrous) Dinner

1 batch of Chocolate Crinkle cookies
1 Pumpkin Gingersnap pie for inspiration
1 disagreement about the potential tastiness of a caramel apple pie with chocolate crinkle crust
1 lazy Sunday afternoon
2 good helpers (and 1 to watch football with Michael)
lots of butter and sugar
  • Crush Chocolate Crinkle cookies. Add walnuts and melted butter according to the Pumpkin Gingersnap pie recipe.
  • Bake at 325 for 10 minutes. Realize that you probably shouldn't have added the butter.
  • Core and peel lots of apples. Mix with lots of butter and sugar. Assign helpers to stir.
  • Discover that you have too many apples for a pie plate.
  • Spoon pie crust into a cake pan. Pour apple mixture on top.
  • Bake at 450 for 15 minutes according to a recipe for caramel apple pie. Realize that you probably should have left that part out.
  • Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Make that 15 minutes.
  • Discover that 15 minutes was still too long.
  • Eat slightly burnt caramel apple pie with chocolate crinkle crust and ice cream.

RESULT OF DISAGREEMENT OVER THE TASTINESS OF CARAMEL APPLE PIE WITH CHOCOLATE CRINKLE CRUST

:: Michael says, "Okay, but not wow..."
:: Erin says, "With some more work, I think I could make this really good...How many more pies can I get away with making?"
:: Boys say, "Yeah! Pie for dinner!"

Our leaf pile

We don't have any trees in our backyard, but our neighbor does and all of his leaves are blowing into our yard. I'm trying to decide if I should go buy a rake or find a neighbor to borrow from. It seems silly to own a rake if you don't have any trees!

It's actually the perfect situation because our neighbor's tree provides just the right amount of shade for our porch and just the right amount of leaves to play in but let's us leave most of our yard sunny for the garden I'm going to plant next spring. Just as long as the neighbor on the other side doesn't decide to plant a tree!

More Pictures from Our Faux Camping Trip

I just posted a blog post on The Conscious Shopper about our Labor Day fun at Jordan Lake. Here are a few more pictures:

Daddy resting, and Rylan recovering from his spill in the lake.

Every time I left the camera with Michael, I'd come back and find two or three pictures like this one. "You guys from my vantage point," Michael explained.
