Who would have thought?

Look at those eyelashes.

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Spring

The high today was in the 80s. It is February. I do not like it. Not at all.

The past couple weeks we've had a range of temps in the 50s to 70s. More of that please.

The boys have decided to catch the evil squirrel that wreaked havoc on my garden last year. So far, the squirrel has not fallen for their traps, but the boys are very hopeful. If I went outside one day and actually found a dead squirrel in one of their traps, I'm not sure how I'd react...

Apparently, there is a trick to kite-flying that we haven't figured out. It's probably something to do with physics, and physics was not my best subject. The highest we ever got the kite off the ground was maybe 20 feet.

To Michael from Me

Michael birthday

To Michael on the day he catches up with me in age,

I think you're the coolest guy I've ever met. I love being around you, and sometimes when I think of you during the day, it makes me smile. I'm amazed every day that you choose to stick with me. Sorry your birthday kind of sucked, but I did make you a nice cake.

Love me

Cole and the Wii

Cole is one of those kids who becomes obsessed with something and then all of his play revolves around that one thing. When he was three or four, it was the Wiggles, and all of his play focused on music. He would set up drum kits with random buckets - note the "cymbal" in the corner and the markers as drumsticks.

He'd make up songs on the keyboard, and anything and everything became a guitar. For awhile, he decided that spatulas looked like guitars, and he carried around my spatula everywhere he went. One time we accidentally left it at a friend's house, and it was like losing a treasured teddy bear or blanket - he wouldn't go to sleep without it.

When he was five, his obsession was Peter Pan, and for several months, he wore his Peter Pan costume day and night. You can find the evidence here and here.

Ever since we got the Wii, Cole has been obsessed with video games, Pokemon, and now Mario. DO NOT ask this kid anything related to any of those subjects because he'll talk your ear off for an hour. Tonight I said to him, "You probably know more about Mario than anyone except people who work for Nintendo."

I was being ironic, but Cole said, "Yeah, that's probably true."

I have to admit that I don't love this obsession like I have the past ones. I'm not a video game fan, and it breaks my heart just a little bit when I say, "Let's go to the playground," and Cole says, "Does that mean we won't have time to play on the Wii?" But I'm trying to let it go and let Cole be Cole.

For a few months, Cole saved up his money and then bought Super Mario All Stars, which is the original three Mario games. Finally, video games I can play! I have to admit that it's been kind of fun playing those with him, especially when he says, "Wow, Momma, you're so good at this!"

And the best part is when I say something like, "Watch out for that duck turtle," and he replies, "Those aren't duck turtles, Momma. Those are koopa-troopas." Cracks me up every time.

I've been bookmarking Valentine's ideas for the past month now, and these are the ones the kids chose (from Family Fun). But just tonight I saw these awesome ones from Filth Wizardry. You've got to check it out.

Cole Says...

We cleaned the church this morning, and afterwards, Cole asked if we could go get a treat as a reward. I said, "The treat is the warm feeling in your heart for doing service."

In the car on the way home, Cole said, "When is that warm feeling going to start? I'm not feeling it."

Superbowl Sunday

Since Michael is still working like a crazy fool, he recorded the Super Bowl yesterday, and we watched it when he got home from work last night around 9:00. Or to clarify, Michael watched the Super Bowl, and I sat next to him and crocheted, watched the commercials, and annoyed him with idle chitchat.

Our favorite commercial:

The worst commercial was that Groupon one about Tibet. I don't know what they were thinking.

My Helper Rylan

Still boredomsville around here, so I thought I'd take a few posts and highlight some of the ways I love my kids, their talents, and interests. First up...Rylan

If you've known me awhile, you might know that although I love being with my kids, I've always been paranoid about being bored as a SAHM. To prevent boredom, I've done everything from work part-time from home, run an online book club, blog like crazy, and get involved with various environmental organizations.

The point is that when Eli started kindergarten last fall and I knew it was going to be just me and Rylan at home, I was worried again that I'd be bored. Instead, I've found that Rylan is a delight to have all to myself. I really think we're developing a special relationship due to our alone time together, and it's nice since Rylan has always been Daddy's boy.

cleaning Rylan

Tuesday through Friday mornings,
we either have Joy School or play dates, but on Mondays when I do my Big Jobs, Rylan is my little helper. He follows me around with a dust rag and helps me get the house clean. He pulls up a stool next to the counter while I'm making bread and insists on turning the Bosch on and off. He helps me so often with cooking that I wonder if he'll be a chef when he grows up. Or maybe I'll be able to turn some of the weeknight cooking over to him when he's a teenager like my mom did with me.
